BISWANATH, July 28: Gangaram Baruah, a revered veteran freedom fighter from Bihali, breathed his last at the age of 99 at his residence in Roumari village, under the Bihali legislative assembly constituency. Gangaram Baruah leaves behind his wife, three sons, two daughters and a host of relatives. Many people gathered to pay their homages to the fallen freedom fighter

Born in 1924, Baruah actively participated in the freedom struggle of India, joining the mass movement of '42 as a volunteer of ‘Mukti Bahini’, fighting to extricate India from the clutches of British colonial rule. After India got its independence, Gangaram Baruah joined the Indian National Congress and dedicated his life in service to the nation, consistently following the principles of Mahatma Gandhi.

His unwavering commitment to the country earned him several honours, including the Tamrapatra and land donation on behalf of the Government of Assam, bestowed by former Chief Ministers Hiteshwar Saikia and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. For almost five decades, Gangaram Baruah served as the village head in seven revenue villages of Batiamari under the Biswanath Revenue Circle, retiring in June 2022 after his relentless service to the motherland.

On Friday, the administration paid its final respects to this esteemed patriot, performing his last rites with full state honours, acknowledging his invaluable contributions to India's struggle for freedom and his lifelong dedication to the welfare of the nation. The legacy of Gangaram Baruah will forever remain etched in the hearts of the people, inspiring generations to come to uphold the spirit of patriotism and Gandhian principles. The entire nation pays its respects to the departed soul and stands in solidarity with the grieving family during this time of sorrow.

The last rites of the freedom fighter were carried out with state honours in the presence of several officers from the police as well as the administration.
